Academic Progress Monitoring for Special Children & Youth
Abstract
The This study examines the effectiveness of the monitoring system for the academic progress of special children and youth within the Special Education Department in Punjab, focusing on the implementation by principals or headmasters at the school or center level. A survey was conducted among 51 heads to assess various aspects of the monitoring system and its alignment with the Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each student. The findings reveal that most heads (70.6%) acknowledged the existence of a clear and documented system for monitoring academic progress, indicating a foundational framework for accountability and tracking student growth. Furthermore, over half of the heads (53.0%) reported that their performance monitoring system was associated with the IEPs, ensuring tailored instructional decisions to meet the specific needs of each student. While most heads (56.8%) indicated regular and constant data collection, a significant portion expressed uncertainty or disagreement regarding the appropriateness of methods for students with diverse needs and disabilities (40.2%). Additionally, despite efforts to analyze and interpret data for instructional decisions (56.8%), there was a lack of clear procedures for communicating progress monitoring data to parents and teachers (54.9%). Teacher training and support emerged as crucial factors, with most heads (66.6%) reporting adequate training for teachers in monitoring the academic progress of special needs students. However, fewer heads (49.0%) indicated ongoing support and resources for improving monitoring skills, highlighting the need for continuous professional development opportunities. Furthermore, collaboration among stakeholders was found to be essential yet lacking. While most heads (56.9%) reported a collaborative culture among teachers, fewer heads (60.8%) indicated regular communication between teachers, parents, and professionals about progress monitoring data. Strengthening collaboration and communication channels is crucial for comprehensive support for students. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of establishing clear and documented monitoring systems tailored to the needs of special children and youth. Continuous training, support, and collaboration among stakeholders are essential for effective implementation and support of the educational success of all students.
