Abstract

This research study aims to analyze the status of women in the country of Pakistan from 1947 to 2025 in a historical perspective. The research outlines the socio-legal, political, economic and educational position of women in various political regimes in the country. It considers the essential laws that have taken place such as Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, Constitution of 1973, Hudood Ordinances 1979, Women Protection Act 2006 and all women related laws after 2008.

The study points to considerable strides made by women in education, political engagement and legal status, including following the 18th Amendment. It reflects, however, continuing issues including gender-based violence, honour killings, low female labour force participation, and lack of awareness of laws and practices in rural areas. The research is conducted by a qualitative historical method, taking advantage of the primary and secondary sources such as constitutional documents, government reports, laws, and scholarly research.

The result shows that Pakistani women have made significant progress in the past seven decades, but their lack of gender equality is still impeded by patriarchal structures, cultural norms and disjointed policies by the state. The findings of this study indicate that sustainable development should be accompanied by a significant change in socio-cultural norms and not only an increase in the laws. The research also helps to comprehend the history of women in Pakistan and provide guidance for the future policy directions.
