Abstract

This research and critical exposition evaluates the profound contributions of YounisJaved to the genre of Urdu sketch writing (Khaka Nigari), positioning his work as acorner stone of modern literary portraiture. While celebrated across diverse creative horizons encompassing realistic fiction, record-breaking television drama, and rigorous textual research—Javed's sketches, compiled in seminal volumes such as Aik Chehra Yeh Bhi Hai and Zikr Us Pari Wash Ka, unveil a uniquely sophisticated intersection of artistic vision, psychological depth, and historical witness. Moving far beyond conventional elegies or passive memoirs, his portraits capture his subjects with an uncompromising yet deeply empathetic realism, illuminating human contradictions, vulnerabilities, and virtues without descending into caricature or sycophancy. Armed with intimate personal insights derived from his lifelong engagement with iconic cultural sanctuaries like Lahore's historic Pak Tea House and the Halqa-e-Arbab-e-Zauq, Javed meticulously reconstructs the socio-literary landscape of his contemporaries. His distinctive prose style characterized by structural brevity, an organic narrative flow, and a sophisticated, subtle undercurrent of humor serves a larger socio-historical purpose. This study demonstrates how Javed seamlessly adapts his fictional prowess in character-building to construct deeply authentic human profiles. Ultimately, his sketch writing transcends the boundaries of individual biography, evolving into an invaluable cultural archive that encapsulates the collective ethos, intellectual vibrancy, and socio-political evolution of Lahore's twentieth-century literary renaissance, leaving an indelible imprint on the heritage of Urdu prose.
